Food roundup
Since 1993, Le Mercaz has been providing food baskets to new immigrants and families living on low income in the Jewish community. Every year, Le Mercaz holds a Food Roundup. The goal is to collect enough non-perishable food items to restock the shelves of the MADA-Le Mercaz Food Bank for the upcoming year.
How does the Food Roundup work?
More than 40,000 plastic collection bags are distributed to homes across Montreal and the West Island. Recipients are asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items, ideally kosher, and to leave them on their doorstep on Sunday, September 17th, 2006. On that day, a team of close to 500 volunteers will go door-to-door picking up the bags and bringing them to the depots where the food is sorted and boxed and prepared for shipping to the food bank for storage and distribution.
With the support of many individual and corporate sponsors, this event will stock our warehouse shelves for about three months and provide funds to help replenish supplies throughout the year. Our two lead sponsors, Scotiabank Group and IGA (Cavendish Mall, Côte St. Luc and Van Horne stores), have been particularly helpful throughout the years. They are crucial to the success of the event.
Volunteer
You can help make this event a success by volunteering at either of our two food depots: Cavendish Mall or Congregation Beth Tikvah.
Donate non-perishable kosher food
While we collect thousands of items of food during the Food Roundup, much more is required for distribution throughout the year. Your donation of food can help keep the shelves at the food bank stocked during the year. Some sample items which are always needed: Canned Fish; Peanut Butter; Jam; Pasta; Rice.
